Ah, what a beautiful day.

So thought Athelflaed as she leaned against the tree she was currently standing in the tall branch of, staring out at the setting sun. The horizon, it seemed, was almost within reach and it took all of what little sense she had within her to not reach out and grab for it. Never before had she felt so close to anything, especially something so strived for.

It was pure chance (or luck, as her mother would have put it) that Flaed was able to stay here for good. She'd never been to Mirkwood for very long at a time, save for visiting Legolas, only heard stories and tales as beautifully woven as her mother's quilts that she used to sew back home. But those days were behind her now, and Flaed had every intention of making new memories and weaving new stories of her own.

She turned from the horizon, golden hair whipping around her face in the refreshing breeze. Mirkwood was the land of promise, or so she'd heard, and she had every intention of healing here. What better place to do so?

She'd used up all of her savings, every penny she'd scimped for in the past few years to get boarding in the great Elven domain. Flaed had lived in poverty all her life, even before her mother died. To her, this city was a luxury, even in the thrid class area where she was staying.

The young woman turned back to that horizon, a small smile planted on her lips as the tiny candle of hope began to flicker somewhere within her for the first time in a long time.

The silver palace at Mirkwood gleamed in an array of fiery colours, due to the setting of the sun on the horizon. It had been a beautiful day, though the blonde elf wouldn't have known. He had been inside the palace all day, working with others on politics and discussing Middle Earth's current affairs. Finally getting the chance to escape from the palace, the Prince of Mirkwood took it eagerly. Walking gently out to the stables near the shimmering palace, the Prince moved to his own horse. His horse was a trained elvish horse, one of two descendants of Roheryn. Roheryn was a famous horse, in Middle Earth, as it was the horse that Aragorn rode during the War of the Ring. The Prince of Mirkwood, Legolas Greenleaf, didn't know who had Arphenion's sister, the only other descendant of Roheryn. He'd find out eventually.

Deciding not to put a saddle on the stallion, Legolas opened the gate of the white horse's stall and led the horse to the bridle area. Taking out the bridle that was specially made for Arphenion, Legolas gingerly attached it to the horse. It whinnied softly, but accepted the bit and bridle. "There, there. We get to explore a bit." Legolas whispered to his white stallion, as he patted its neck. Moving to the side of the horse, Legolas swung a leg over Arphenion's back and easily hopped onto the white horse. Giving it a little kick, the horse moved forward and out of the stables. Arphenion trotted slowly out into the forest, and, ears twitching, heard some movement or presence out in the woods. Against Legolas's wishes, Arphenion moved toward the presence of another person in the wood. Since the person didn't know about the horse or even Legolas, Legolas dismounted the stallion and held the reins as he approached the figure of a girl against a tree. His silver crown [like Galadriel's crown] rested against his forehead, his long blonde hair resting on his chest. Legolas was about to say hello, but the girl seemed to have heard him, as she turned around, seemingly startled.

(( Hmmm... ))

So preoccupied was Flaed with her thoughts, that she wasn't paying attention to her surroundings. Legolas's approach had scared the liver out of her, and as a result the young half elf jumped and slipped out of the tree, falling and landing in the bushes not too far below.

She cursed herself inwardly as she looked up into the eyes of Legolas, who seemed just as surprised to see her as she was to see him. What if it wasn't him? she asked herself bitterly, pulling a twig from her hair. If it had been an enemy, it would've caught me offguard and had the upper hand.

Smiling sheepishly, Flaed stood, brushing her simple breeches off and lifting her eyes to his ocne again. "You startled me, Lego." she admonished teasingly, adjusting the sheathed sword at her side. "You caught me in a daze."

Chuckling, she smiled at him, before reaching up a bit to scratch between Arphenion's ears gently, then petted his long velvety nose with practiced strokes. The horse was beautiful and Flaed knew Legolas took good care of him.

She looked back to her royal Elven friend, the teasing smile still in place. "What brings HiS Majesty out here?" she asked. "I thought you were in council until tonight."

That was really the only reason she was out here alone. When Legolas had "princey" (as she fondly called it) duties to attend to, Flaed gave him all the space he needed and waited for him for be finished.

"Slacking off?"

(( Hmmm? ))

"You startled me, Lego. You caught me in a daze."

Legolas watched as the half-elf fell out of the tree. However, he hadn't moved quickly enough to catch her, or at least save her from a bit of the pain of falling into a bush. Lego? Was that his nickname now? Athelflaed and Legolas had a newly kindled friendship, but it was a strong bond and a close relationship. "My apologies, Athelflaed." Legolas said, his voice light and relaxed. What she didn't know was that Legolas had been thinking about her in all of his meetings that day. The worst way to miss someone, after all, was to be sitting right next to them and knowing that you cannot have them. That was how Legolas felt, at that moment, staring out at the horizon. His father would never approve, though, and that was what mattered to Legolas.

Arphenion nuzzled Athelflaed's cheek with his long nose, having missed her company. Though Legolas was his master, Arphenion was accustomed to also having Athelflaed around him a lot. His pure white ears twitched gently, as Athelflaed scratched between the two of them.

"What brings HiS Majesty out here? I thought you were in council until tonight."

Legolas watched Athelflaed, as she pet Arphenion. Letting go of Arphenion's reins, Legolas patted the horse's neck and muttered a few words to the stallion in elvish. Almost instantly, the horse began trotting off to graze on some grass. "His Majesty has managed to leave Council early." Legolas answered, aware that he had been speaking in third person. But in truth, Legolas would rather have lived the life of a poor elf than the life of a prince. Whether they realized it or not, poor elves had much more freedom.

"Slacking off?"

Hmph. Slacking off? No, that wasn't the right name for it. Legolas took a seat against the trunk of the steady tree, not really caring at the moment if it would spoil the embroidery on his tunic or not. "I would not call it slacking. Simply, taking a break." Legolas answered, a light smile playing on his features.

Laughing slightly, she sat down under a tree to look at him. The casting rays of sun passed over his face elegantly, making him look even more regal. She always felt more at peace when she was with him. He made her at ease and relaxed.

He'd been on her mind a lot lately, Sure they were friends, and naturally friends were on one's mind, but this was different. She looked at him sadly as he sat beside her, a forlorn look in her eyes. She could never have him, not really anyway. He'd be frowned upon, ridiculed, and she didn't want that for him. She wanted him to be happy. She sighed lightly and looked out into the horizon, deciding for once to be a bit deeper than normal.

"Of course not, you're a wonderful prince." she said softly, smiling, and then studying the sun's colorful rays.

"Legolas... do you ever wish you weren't a prince? I mean.. so you could do as you choose? Be with who you choose?"

She hoped she wasn't giving herself away.

"Of course not, you're a wonderful prince."

Could there really be a wonderful prince? What was the definition of such a being? There are many connotations of such a person, but which one was the right one? You could be a wonderful Prince to the people, but have other royalty or people with high standards hate you. Or you could be a wonderful prince to those of a stature almost like yours, but have the common people hate you. Or you could just be a horrible prince, in which case everyone would hate you. Legolas really did just wish that people would look beyond the titles of royalty, and see the soul inside. "Does such a prince exist?" Legolas asked, hoping his preferred words of wisdom would make sense to his close friend. It didn't seem logical to him, as Legolas had thought of this before for a few hours, maybe longer.

"Legolas... do you ever wish you weren't a prince? I mean.. so you could do as you choose? Be with who you choose?"

If Athelflaed wasn't a half elf, Legolas would've assumed that she had been lurking into his mind. As far as he was aware, though, half-elves didn't have the same powers as regular elves. Did he ever wish? When did he not wish? Legolas's blue-green eyes searched Athelflaed's, wondering what kind of answer she wanted to that question. "Yes, I do wish. But a wish is just that, and they scarcely become reality." Legolas answered, sadly. If a wish would come true, maybe Legolas would actually be happy. Sure, there were times when he was happy with his life. But being Prince wasn't all it cracked up to be.

Athelflaed sighed and pulled up her knees, folding her arms over them and resting her chin on her arms. Sadness tugged at her heartstrings and she stared, not really seeing, at the colors dancing in front of the pair. Should someone look at her, they would assume she was staring at the horizon intently, but in reality she wasn't paying the least bit of attention.

"No," she said after a long moment as a soft breeze picked up. "I suppose not." She dared not look at him and tried with all her might to steer her thoughts away from him, in fear that he would read her mind, even thought he promised he never would intentionaly without her permission.

Sighing, she stretched a bit, pushing her legs flat out in front of her and twisted so she was laying on her back, staring up at the tree caonpy. Golden-grey eyes searched for something that could never be found.

"I trust you, though." she said suddenly, in reference to their earlier conversation, seemingly forgetting their moment.

"I know you'll make a good decision, for everyone. So what if you're not a 'wonderful' prince to everyone, you are to me."

Laughing to make it a joke, but secretly serious, she sat up and winked. "You're my prince, Lego." she chuckled merrily.
